Americas VALORANT Players Association Urges Riot Games to Fix Tier 2 Scene
The Americas VALORANT Players Association (AVPA) has issued a strong call to Riot Games to address the alarming decline of the Tier 2 scene in North America. This scene, which includes Challengers and Game Changers, serves as the critical developmental ground for emerging talent in professional VALORANT. However, according to the AVPA, systemic challenges—such as financial instability, minimal structural support, and reduced organizational interest—are undermining its future. The AVPA has outlined several urgent solutions that Riot must consider to prevent the Tier 2 ecosystem from collapsing entirely.
Systemic Problems Plaguing the Tier 2 Scene
Stability
The AVPA points out that financial instability has driven away many organizations from the Tier 2 scene. With minimal return on investment (ROI) and no clear revenue-sharing model, organizations are left without meaningful incentives to stay involved. The pursuit of a guest slot in VCT as the only motivation has proven insufficient, as shorter seasons and low prize pools leave teams struggling to justify the cost of competing.
Engagement
Viewer engagement has also suffered, with Challengers and Game Changers tournaments often disappearing for long stretches and returning with different players and organizations. This inconsistency makes it difficult for fans to connect with teams and storylines, further weakening the scene's appeal. Unregulated watch parties have helped in drawing attention, but they are not enough to solve the long-term challenges of building sustained fan interest.
Scheduling and Collegiate Development
Overlapping match schedules and unclear progression paths have left many players frustrated and disengaged. The AVPA also highlights the underutilization of the collegiate system as a pipeline for developing talent. Colleges could offer a stable environment for aspiring pros, but the lack of integration with the broader competitive ecosystem limits this potential.
The Shrinking Tier 2 Scene: A Threat to NA VALORANT's Future
Without a strong Tier 2 ecosystem, the talent pipeline for Tier 1 will wither. Tier 2 is the breeding ground for emerging stars and compelling narratives that drive fan engagement, and its collapse would have dire consequences for the future of VALORANT esports in North America.
Drawing comparisons to traditional sports leagues, the AVPA points out that successful organizations like the NBA and MLB invest in developmental leagues to ensure long-term growth. Without similar investments, the AVPA warns that Riot's approach to prioritizing short-term profitability over long-term development could stifle the growth of the scene.
Proposed Solutions: A Path Forward
To address these challenges, the AVPA has proposed several solutions that they believe could revitalize the Tier 2 scene. Among the most critical are:
- Revenue Sharing: Introducing skins and marketing incentives to create a consistent revenue stream for Tier 2 organizations.
- Year-Round Event Calendar: Establishing a full competitive season to ensure ongoing investment and fan engagement.
- Finder’s Fees: Rewarding organizations that successfully promote players to Tier 1 teams.
- Mandatory Development Contracts: Require Tier 1 teams to establish development contracts with Tier 2 players.
- Media Accessibility and Coverage: Invest in the promotion of the next generation of VALORANT stars by producing mini-documentaries, player profiles, and other content, highlighting the stories behind Tier 2 players and teams.
- Cash Injections: Provide direct financial support to the Tier 2 ecosystem through prize pools, performance bonuses, and organizational stimulus packages.
By implementing these measures and more, the AVPA believes Riot Games can restore the health and sustainability of the North American Tier 2 VALORANT scene.
A Call for Immediate Action
The AVPA’s call to action emphasizes that the challenges facing Tier 2 VALORANT are significant but solvable. With targeted reforms, Riot Games can create a sustainable ecosystem that nurtures talent and drives long-term success. Without immediate changes, however, the future of North American VALORANT is at risk, and the next generation of professional players may be lost. The AVPA urges Riot Games to act now before it’s too late.
