The Remington 870 MCS is a pump-action shotgun featured in several Call of Duty titles. Known for its high damage and tight spread, it's one of the most consistent shotguns in the franchise when used correctly. This guide covers the weapon’s key stats, appearances across games, best attachments, and strengths in both Multiplayer and Zombies modes. Learn everything about the Call of Duty Remington 870 MCS — stats, versions, attachments, strengths, and its role across multiple games.

What Is the Remington 870 MCS?

The Remington 870 Modular Combat Shotgun (MCS) is a 12-gauge pump-action shotgun. In Call of Duty, it’s known for delivering strong one-shot kill potential, maintaining high base damage, and operating with a slower fire rate due to its manual cycling. It appears in Black Ops II, Modern Warfare (2019) under the name Model 680, and Modern Warfare III (2023) as the Lockwood 680. It also briefly appears in a cutscene in Black Ops 6 and was removed during development from Modern Warfare 2 and Black Ops III.

Damage and Fire Rate

In Black Ops II, the Remington 870 MCS fires 8 pellets per shot:

  • Damage (MP): 50–10 x8

  • Rate of Fire: 80 RPM

  • Magazine Size: 8 shells (11 with Extended Clip)

  • ADS Time: 250ms

  • Reload Time (Full): 5.7s (4.9s with Reload Cancel)

It can kill in one shot within 9 meters if at least three pellets hit. Beyond 11 meters, two shots are required. There are no body multipliers, and it doesn’t penetrate walls.

Multiplayer Performance

Strengths

  • Reliable one-shot kills at close range

  • Accurate iron sights

  • Consistent spread when aiming down sights

  • Fast aim movement (100% walking, 80% strafing)

Weaknesses

  • Low rate of fire

  • Small ammo capacity

  • Long reload times

  • No wall penetration

Missing a shot can leave you exposed. Close-quarters accuracy is key.

Recommended Attachments (Black Ops II)

The Long Barrel attachment improves range by 16%, which makes one-shot kills more reliable. Fast Mag helps reduce the long reload time by loading two shells at once. This cuts down the maximum reload time significantly. The Laser Sight tightens hip-fire spread, which benefits players who don’t use aim-down-sight often. Extended Clip increases the magazine size to eleven shells and provides more starting ammo. Quickdraw Handle reduces ADS time, making it faster to line up shots.

On the other hand, the Reflex Sight adds little value since the iron sights are already clear. The Suppressor reduces range, which negatively affects one-shot kills. Adjustable Stock offers only minor movement benefits and isn't worth sacrificing other attachments.

In Zombies Mode

In Black Ops II, the Remington 870 MCS appears as a wall-buy weapon on maps like TranZit, Die Rise, and Buried. It costs between 900 and 1500 points, depending on the map and location. In Origins, it can be dug up from the ground.

Its performance is similar to the Stakeout and M1897 Trench Gun, but with only four pellets per shell in Zombies, it quickly loses power in later rounds. Without Double Tap Root Beer, it struggles past round 10. Aiming down sights or getting very close becomes necessary to secure kills.

Pack-a-Punched Version

Once Pack-a-Punched, the 870 becomes the Refitted-870 Mechanical Cranium Sequencer. It deals much higher damage, has a faster pump action, a tighter hip-fire spread, and increases magazine size to ten shells with a maximum ammo pool of 80. Zombies explode in a red mist on kill. The upgraded version cycles between Reflex Sight and iron sights when repacked.

Modern Warfare: The Model 680

In Modern Warfare (2019), the 870 returns as the Model 680. It keeps the same pump-action style but offers many Gunsmith customization options.

The Model 680 fires 12-gauge shells and has a base magazine of eight rounds. It supports different ammo types including slugs, Dragon’s Breath rounds, and tube extensions. Attachments are available for every part of the gun, including multiple muzzle options, long and short barrels, several optics, stocks, and underbarrel grips. The shotgun’s performance can be tuned for hip-fire or longer-range slug play.

Modern Warfare III: The Lockwood 680

In Modern Warfare III, the weapon appears again under the name Lockwood 680. It is a starting shotgun with a similar feel to its previous versions.

It can hold six shells with standard barrels, four with short barrels, and up to ten with long barrels. The shotgun appears in the campaign, used by Gaz during the Highrise mission. In Zombies, players can bring it into Operation Deadbolt as a Common-rarity weapon, or acquire it through the Mystery Box. It can be upgraded with the Pack-a-Punch machine or Aetherium Crystals, becoming the Mo-Wood. The upgraded version gains improved stats, including damage and ammo capacity.

Campaign Appearances

In Black Ops II, the shotgun becomes available after completing Fallen Angel. It’s used by the enemy DeFalco in the mission’s intro. In Modern Warfare (2019), it’s used by multiple factions including Al-Qatala and the USMC. In Modern Warfare III, Gaz uses it as his main weapon in a campaign mission. Black Ops 6 features the shotgun briefly in a cutscene with Frank Woods, though it's not available to players.

Blueprints and Skins

Across Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare III, the Remington 870 MCS has many available blueprints. Some Legendary variants include Death Trap, Apex Predator, Ghost Stories, and Muck and Mire. Epic blueprints include Showstopper, Corner Clear, and Ghost Stories. Rare and Common variants also exist, such as The Ejector, Hush, and 1337 Skeet. Each blueprint comes with a preset visual theme and attachments.

Final Thoughts

The Call of Duty Remington 870 MCS is a powerful shotgun with clear advantages in close quarters. It performs best when used with precision, especially within its one-shot kill range. Players who rely on accurate shooting and movement will benefit from its raw stopping power. Despite a slow fire rate and limited ammo, the 870 MCS remains one of the most satisfying shotguns across Call of Duty titles.
