After four days of some of the highest level of StarCraft II gameplay in recent memory, the Esports World Cup SC2 tournament sees Clément "Clem" Desplanches take home the trophy.

Following a dominant run by the young Terran, Clem closed the tournament with a stellar outing in the Grand Finals against none other than Zerg superstar Joona "Serral" Sotala

Clem - Champion of the World

With the title of World Champion and $400,000 on the line, Clem and Serral set the stage for a historic series.

The young French took off into the finals with an absolute Terran vs Zerg (TvZ) masterclass in games 1 and 2 of the series. The lightning fast Terran player was relentless with his pressure, seemingly being everywhere at all times. Setting up perfectly timed attacks time after time, Clem simply did not give Serral a chance to catch his breath.

As the series evolved, Serral appeared adaptable, often demonstrating he had learned a thing or two from the previous game, and answering accordingly. And yet, like an uncontrollable tsunami, Clem incessantly found new ways to flood Serral's defenses.

Having always been a deity in micro and speed, Clem's evolution as a player was in full display in game 4 of the finals, where the French player's macro game excelled even beyond that of the seemingly unsurpassable Serral.

With immaculate production and map control, Clem took game 4 of the series before proving his unrelenting pressure to be too much for Serral to handle once more in game 5, sweeping the finals in astonishing 5-0 fashion.

Clem dominates the master

Serral's overtaking of the SC2 sphere over the last few years was perhaps overshadowed by Clem's own domination of Serral over the course of the Esports World Cup.

Clem first shocked the world by sweeping the Finnish Zerg on his way to topping Group B at the EWC with a 3-0 victory, quickly settling himself into the final four.

Once over the hurdle of the semifinals, awaiting at the other end was, yet again, Serral, this time surely hungry for revenge.

Facing off for the second time in the tournament, this time in a best-of-9 series, Clem swept Serral once more to cap off a domination of Serral that has simply been unheard of.

Having ravaged through the competition all tournament long, Clem only dropped maps against Riccardo "Reynor" Romiti at the Esports World Cup.

All other series he played at the tournament, Clem swept. The Terran player's run at the EWC was, simply put, uncontestable.

A Waking Rivalry

Having dominated most of the ESL 2023/2024 Pro Tour, Serral showed up to the Esports World Cup as the irrefutable favorite to win it all, and do it in style.

The only player to have won a major international tournament throughout the 23/24 circuit not named Serral was none other than Clem himself. Having upset the Finnish Zerg in the semifinals, Clem went on to win the ESL Masters 2023 Winter trophy, thus putting a dent in Serral's domination of the SC2 world.

Now, with Clem taking the title of StarCraft II World Champion away from Serral, the two European superstars are giving shape to what is turning out to be a Zerg vs Terran rivalry for the ages.

A new dawn for StarCraft II

The level of play at the Esports World Cup finals was higher than any other series of StarCraft II in recent memory. With a towering prize pool and unparalleled excitement, the EWC has gone a long way in reestablishing SC2 as one of the more respected esports in the world.

The thrill of the tournament will carry over the next few tournaments of competitive StarCraft II, benefitting players and tournaments across the globe.

After his domination of some of the very best players that StarCraft II has ever seen, all eyes will be on Clem's performance at his next tournament, whenever he chooses that to be.
