Copenhagen will host The International 2024
The International Dota 2 is one of the pinnacles of esports tournaments. The tournament is where the best Dota 2 teams duke it out for the prestigious title of being a TI Champion. Recently, Valve has released details about The International 2024, building up the hype on the tournament.
For the 2024 Dota 2 professional scene, Valve has been pretty much keeping their hands off from interacting with it. Thus, the third-party tournament organisers have stepped up in hosting Dota 2 tournaments. As a result, it caused the Dota 2 community to raise their concerns that Valve’s actions could lead to the disappearance of the prestigious Dota 2 tournament.
However, despite not hosting any tournaments, Valve has been closely monitoring the professional scene. As the TI season looms, they announced that The International is back on the menu, reassuring the fans that TI is not disappearing anytime soon.
The International 2024 Location
In the latest Valve blog post titled “ The International 2024”, the developers of Dota 2 confirmed that the prestigious tournament will return to European soil for the first time since The International 2021. Copenhagen, Denmark, will be the hosting ground for The International 2024.
The last time TI was in Europe, an Eastern European underdog, Team Spirit, was crowned as the champions. After defeating the crowd favourites, LGD Gaming, Spirit took home a whopping 18 million USD in prize-winning that year.
The Qualification Process
Valve also talked about the qualification process for The International 2024 in their blog post. The Dota 2 developers will be reverting to the invite process used in the early days of the professional Dota 2 scene for most teams.
During the initial days of the Dota 2 professional scene, there wasn't an established system in place for teams to qualify directly for the tournament. As a result, teams had to deliver their best performance at every LAN if they hoped to secure a direct invitation to TI.
The Qualifiers Slots
Valve is yet to publicly disclose the number of slots each region will receive for the qualifiers. At a minimum, each region can expect to receive a slot for the prestigious tournament. Additionally, based on the recent success of Team Falcons, Valve may add a seventh region to the qualifiers.
The return of the qualifiers could also indicate the return of last-chance qualifiers. The last chance qualifiers played a crucial part at The International 2022. Team Secret, a team that qualified through the last chance qualifiers, made it to the grand finals, where they placed in the runner-up spot.
What’s More
Valve has yet to announce the information about the tickets and schedules for the tournament. However, in their blog post for The International 2024, Valve disclosed they’re considering bringing Midas Mode to the prestigious tournament.
Midas Mode is a game mode where the professional Dota 2 teams compete against each other in an international virtual gaming tournament while managing virtual money. In the previous iteration of the tournament, all the prize winnings go to the charitable organization of the winning team’s choosing.
Valve is yet to announce the exact date for The International 2024. However, the tournament will be taking place in Copenhagen’s Royal Arena in Copenhagen, Denmark, in September. Copenhagen will also host its first CS 2 Major this month, on March 17th, in the same arena.
