Dota 2 and League of Legends Voice Actor Passes Away
Dota 2 lost an iconic voice as Sam A. Mowry passed away on July 20th. Sam was the voice of the Shopkeeper in Dota 2, along with several heroes as well. His voice went far beyond the world of Dota 2, as he was also a part of League of Legends, Amnesia, and many other incredible games.
In this article, we will list our favorite lines for each hero Sam A. Mowry voiced. Keep in mind that it is extremely subjective and just our small tribute to an amazing voice actor.
The best Sam A. Mowry lines in Dota 2
Beastmaster
"Welcome to the food chain" is a cool line by Beastmaster when he gets a kill. It's a nice play on his theme and sounds solid as well. Truth be told, Beastmaster's lines are pretty average overall, so not much to highlight here.
Necrophos
"Die young and leave a purulent corpse" is another kill line, this time from Necrophos. I love the word "purulent", it's rare to see but perfect for a death and disease theme hero like Necrophos.
Slardar
"You were out of your depth" is the last kill line to make it to our list and the most versatile. I've seen players bind this and use it whenever they escape a gank, deny a creep, or win the game. It also fits well with Slardar's theme and comes off quite menacing.
Anti-Mage
"Beset on all sides, still I prevail!" is one of the best Sam A Mowry lines in Dota 2. It's uttered when Anti-Mage respawns and showcases his will to continue the fight despite overwhelming odds. I love the line, its delivery, and how well it fits Anti-Mage's perseverance. (which runs counter to how most AM players actually behave).
Clockwerk
"I've a mind like a steel trap, and the physique to go with it!" tells you a lot about Clockwerk when you pick him. He's smart, funny, and he is going to go into the thick of battle. Sam catches Clockwerk's whimsical personality from the moment he spawns in the game.
Warlock
"My friends, I'm calling it: It's in the bag!" Sam A. Mowry utters every line from Warlock's taunt with incredible gravitas. It encourages your allies and warns your enemies that Warlock is here and he's got summons ready to win the game. This is a line that's good but elevated so much by its voice actor.
The Shopkeeper
Sam A. Mowry's best line in Dota 2 is the one most players heard first. In the trailer released in August 2011, the Shopkeeper asks the player "What does a hero truly need?" and lists the stats of each hero along with how he can improve it.
The Dota 2 trailer is timeless and iconic. It showcases several heroes in life-and-death struggles and ends with incredible music. A huge part of what makes the trailer so amazing is Sam A. Mowry asking us "What does a hero truly need?". A line that goes beyond the world of Dota 2.
Writing this was a little more emotional than I thought it would be. Sam gave a voice to many heroes and that voice turned them into characters. Sam A. Mowry was more than Warlock, or Anti-Mage, or the Shopkeeper. He was a storyteller and he will be missed.
