In a recent blog post, Valve confirmed the annual Battle Pass will not return for this year’s International. In its stead, Valve announced the return of the older iteration of the event, The International Compendium.

Rumors about the Battle Pass getting replaced by Compendium started to resurface around a month ago. Data miners found an in-game Work in Progress file in The Summer Client Update and leaked it within the community.

The Announcement

Valve announced three new events for the upcoming Internationals in the latest blog post.

The blog post also stated the tickets for The Internationals are nearly sold out, with only a few thousand tickets remaining.

Along with the Cosplay Contest and Short Film Contest, they’re bringing back Pub stomps.

Pub stomps are recognized live viewing parties amongst Dota 2 fans and enthusiasts who cannot attend the prestigious tournament in person.

With the recent announcement, Valve officially made the event part of The International. Valve also intends to open a page for TI12 pub stomps signups. They also plan to include some pub stomps live in the TI broadcast.

The History Of Compendium

Valve introduced The International Compendium a decade ago at The Internationals 3. Back then, they intended to boost The tournament’s prize pool via crowdfunding.

The Compendium consisted of several upgrades for the heroes and new items. It was a tremendous success, as the prize pool for The International doubled.  Since then, Valve included The Compendium in every iteration of The International.

In 2016, they upgraded The Compendium to be part of The Battlepass.

Every year since, The Battle Pass has increased the prize pool of The International, breaking records annually. In 2021, The Internationals had a record-breaking 40 million USD prize pool, the highest prize pool in Esport history.

However, at The International 2022, with a prize pool of 18.9 million USD, The International’s prize pool decreased for the first time.

Why The BattlePass Discontinued

The International 2022 Battle Pass made Valve re-evaluate its actions. Per their inspection, Valve found an interesting conclusion.

Most players never buy a Battle Pass. Thus, they never receive any rewards from it.

To rephrase their words, Valve decided to discontinue the Battle Pass because it soaks up all the exciting content they had in store for The International season. After the Battle Pass ended, they had to wait to test multiple new contents for the next International season.

Earlier this year, Valve experimented with their ideas. They released the contents included in The Battle Pass update in a patch update. To their surprise, the community rejoiced at this approach.

Thus, they decided to include a variety of features and in-game content for the game to deliver in different ways instead of putting everything in the Battle Pass update.

The community is delighted Valve is finally putting in more effort for the game. Moreover, the work Valve is putting in in bringing some life back into the game. Their recent patch updates resonated with the community’s requests. With The International 2023 around the corner, the entire Dota 2 community is eagerly waiting for more content and updates Valve will be putting out soon.
