The group stage for ESL One Birmingham is over and the results are surprising. Former Titans have been eliminated, some teams that won LAN events this year barely hung on, while certain underdogs looked surprisingly dominant.

Due to the composition of the tournament favoring teams from Europe, some regions only have one representative in the event and certain regions failed to secure their place in the playoffs.

Talon Esports and Shopify Rebellion dominate South East Asia and North America regions respectively. The two teams often beat all others in tournament qualifiers to secure their spot at LAN events.

Despite their regional success, both teams have yet to make a deep run at a tournament. Talon Esports was among the first teams eliminated at the Elite League group stage, while Shopify's only tournament appearance so far has been a 7th-place finish at DreamLeague Season 22.

The trend for the two teams continued at Birmingham. Shopify Rebellion was effectively eliminated when they lost all their matches on day two, while Talon fared slightly better but couldn't secure a much-needed game against Team Falcons.

With the two teams eliminated, North America and Southeast Asia won't field a team for the playoffs.

Gaimin Gladiators and Team Spirit continue to struggle in 2024

The two most successful teams of 2023 have yet to make their presence felt this year. Gaimin Gladiators won all three Majors in 2023 along with a second-place finish at The International. Team Spirit won the two biggest events of the year, Riyadh Masters and The International.

Neither team has made any roster change yet they have yet to find their footing this year. Gaimin Gladiators has thrice found themselves making it to the top six but going no further, a significant downgrade from last year. Team Spirit's results have been equally middling.

Time will tell if the results so far are a short-lived trend for the two teams or signs of bigger problems on the roster.

OG shines after a controversial invite

OG Esports had their work cut out for them at Birmingham. The team was invited after 1win couldn't secure a visa for the event, an invite that left a sour taste in some parts of the community.

The team had their work cut out for them, especially after their relatively mediocre results at Elite League and BetBoom Dacha Dubai. OG proved their worth with a 2-0 victory over Xtreme Gaming, and draws against every other team, establishing their spot at the top of Group B.

The playoffs for ESL One Birmingham begin on April 25th. Fans can catch all the action live on Twitch.
