The Turkish Counter-Strike 2 powerhouse Eternal Fire has officially withdrawn from the upcoming IEM Melbourne 2025 tournament, as announced by ESL on April 3 of 2025.

The prestigious event, scheduled to take place from April 21 to 27 at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia, will now see the Portuguese organization SAW stepping in to fill the vacant spot

Health Concerns Behind the Decision

The withdrawal appears to be primarily health-related, with star player XANTARES reportedly hospitalized due to severe back issues. This development comes after months of non-stop competition for the Turkish roster, who have been participating in every major tournament since the beginning of 2025, including BLAST Bounty Spring qualifiers, IEM Katowice, PGL Cluj-Napoca, ESL Pro League Season 21, and BLAST Open Spring 2025.

The demanding schedule has seemingly taken its toll, with XANTARES' physical condition deteriorating to the point where medical intervention became necessary. The player's recent performance had noticeably declined, with his statistics dropping below his usual high standards during their latest tournament appearances.

Tournament Logistics

Eternal Fire's withdrawal creates a significant scheduling relief for the team, who would have otherwise faced a grueling three-week stretch covering tournaments in Bucharest, Qatar, and Melbourne. This break provides a much-needed opportunity for the squad to recover, regroup, and spend time with their families.

SAW Steps In

Following established protocol, ESL approached teams based on the latest global rankings to fill the vacant spot. While G2 Esports expressed interest, they were unable to secure visas in time for the event. Both Astralis and FURIA declined the invitation, leading ESL to extend the offer to SAW, who promptly accepted.

For the Portuguese organization, this represents a rare opportunity to compete at an elite-level tournament. SAW recently faced FaZe Clan at PGL Cluj-Napoca 2025, and the Melbourne event could potentially offer them a chance for redemption against the same opponent.

Community Reaction

The CS2 community has generally supported Eternal Fire's decision, with many fans expressing concern for XANTARES' health and acknowledging the team's need for rest.

Some have drawn comparisons to Astralis' management practices, though others have noted that XANTARES is one of Eternal Fire's founders and maintains a close relationship with the organization's ownership, suggesting the decision was likely mutual rather than forced.

Looking Ahead

The $300,000 tournament will proceed with its 16-team format, featuring elite organizations including Team Spirit, Vitality, Natus Vincere, FaZe, MOUZ, Liquid, and Virtus.pro.

For Eternal Fire, this break could prove beneficial in the long run, allowing XANTARES to recover and potentially return to his IEM Katowice form, where he was considered the team's standout performer.

With teammates like Wicadia stepping up in recent months, a fully recovered Eternal Fire squad could emerge as serious contenders in future tournaments.

For now, however, health and recovery remain the priority for the Turkish organization as they take a rare step back from competition.
