G2 Esports dismantle Team Spirit to win the BLAST Premier: World Final
“It's not a rivalry, it's a stomp.” – Launders
G2 Esports dismantle Team Spirit to lift their third trophy this year and become champions of BLAST Premier World Final 2024.
What was expected to be a neck-to-neck series turned into a one-sided affair with G2’s stars showing their prowess in the Resorts World Convention Centre. From a heartbreaking early elimination in Rio to a trophy lift in Singapore is quite the bounce back, as the Samurai got a confidence boost before the Perfect World Shanghai Major.
G2 now extends their record against Spirit to 10 consecutive map wins, proving their worth as the favorites coming into the grand final. Janusz "Snax" Pogorzelski and co steamrolled Leonid "chopper" Vishnyakov’s spirit, denying them double digit rounds on all three maps.
Spirit’s T-side abolished
The grand final started on Mirage, G2’s map pick, with the Russian squad getting into the swing of things early with a pistol round and conversion. However, G2 responded on the full buy with four consecutive rounds, before Spirit hit back with five of their own.
Spirit on CT side were successful with Danil “donk” Kryshkovets firing on all cylinders, ending the half with 14 frags and 130 ADR. But things went backwards in the second half with a weak T side. During the entire latter half, Spirit couldn’t score a single round with all its players vanishing into thin air.
Mirage concluded with a 13-7 scoreline, before heading into Anubis where Spirit’s trouble doubled.
No rounds on the Terrorists territory
Ever since its introduction to the map pool, Anubis heavily favored the offense. Yet, Spirit failed again at collecting a single round despite boasting sharpshooters like Donk who’s by the far the best entry fragger in the event.
Their ineffective T side took a toll on the Spirit squad, deeming their efforts to claw back in the game impossible. While the Russians were looking for a glimpse of hope, Nikola “NiKo” Kovač took the matter into his own with a masterclass performance, securing the second map with 23 frags and 136 ADR.
Spirit’s T side cost them the title, and Chopper is the first to point the finger at since he’s the in-game leader. Between their most played maps in the BLAST Premier: World Final, Spirit scored the lowest round win percentage on the T side, which might be enough for Spirit to pull the plug and find a more capable leader.
G2 seals the deal on Dust 2
G2 secured the first two maps thanks to NiKo and m0NESY’s impact. But on Dust 2, it was the other Kovač’s turn to step up and deliver his best map since IEM Cologne 2024.
Nemanja "huNter-" Kovač put the final nail in Spirit’s coffin by dropping 27 kills and completely obliterating them with his countless multi kills per round. Donk was the only positive rated player on the last map for Spirit and made the first half competitive with four rounds. Yet, without the remaining members, his efforts were gone with the wind as soon as G2 seized the pistol round and the conversion.
By then, Spirit felt defeated, and it was evident in the second half with their unforgivable mistakes and lack of firepower, ultimately handing G2 the victory on a silver platter at 13-7.
At last, G2 put up a spectacular show in Singapore and managed to not only take the title, but also surprise the scene with an incredible bounce back. Now, the focus shifts towards the Perfect World Shanghai Major RMR where they’ll look to secure their ticket into the main stage and give NiKo his first Major title?
Well, that might be a stretch but be sure to catch the RMR action starting the 11th of November and stay updated with the latest esports news on Strafe.
