G2 Esports have announced the release of their Valorant duelist player, Jacob “icy” Lange, after one season with the team. The organization confirmed that icy will be a free agent starting October 7th, giving him the opportunity to explore other options for the upcoming VCT season.

Icy’s Debut Season with G2 Esports

Icy’s first season with G2 Esports marked his entry into the tier one scene after years in tier two competition. Initially, the team struggled, facing an early exit in the play-ins stage of the Americas Kickoff after a surprising defeat to MIBR. However, G2 bounced back, finishing Stage 1 with a 3-3 record and narrowly securing a playoff spot.

As the season progressed, icy found his footing, helping G2 qualify for Masters Shanghai, where they pulled off a major upset against Paper Rex and finished in the top three. Despite their strong showing in Shanghai, G2 couldn’t maintain their form, being eliminated in the first round of Champions Seoul without winning a map.

G2’s Current Roster

With icy’s departure, G2’s roster now consists of the following players and staff:

  • Jacob "valyn" Batio
  • Trent "trent" Cairns
  • Jonah "JonahP" Pulice
  • Nathan "leaf" Orf
  • Josh "JoshRT" Lee (Head Coach)
  • Peter "shhhack" Belej (Assistant Coach)

Looking ahead and potential replacements

G2 Esports is rumored to be exploring potential replacements for icy, with Jawgemo emerging as a strong candidate to fill the duelist role. Additionally, there has been smaller speculation around G2's interest in high-profile players such as Demon1 and Derke, who could bring a new level of firepower to the roster ahead of the upcoming VCT season.

While G2’s roster undergoes changes, icy’s future in competitive VALORANT remains uncertain. However, his performance during the season, particularly at Masters Shanghai, suggests that he may find another opportunity in the tier one scene soon.
