How to Play Overwatch 2 Orisa: Backstory, Abilities, Guide, and More
Orisa is a tank hero in Overwatch 2, notable for her massive gatling gun and immovability on objectives. She was released on the 21st of March 2017 in Overwatch and despite receiving massive changes coming into Overwatch 2, she still remains one of the stronger tanks to play in Overwatch 2.
Orisa Backstory
Orisa was originally an OR15 unit, one of the many designed and employed to defend Numbani. However, the unit that would come to be known as Orisa was badly damaged by Doomfist during his attack. Numbani inventor, Efi Oladele, purchased the unit and restored it, adding her own personal upgrades to improve Orisa’s ability to defend in the future.
After restoring the unit, Efi named it Orisa – after the Orisha spirits of Yoruban mythology – and set about training the unit into a proper hero defender for Numbani. After successfully repelling Doomfist and his forces, Efi and Orisa became national heroes and Sojourn of Overwatch made contact with Orisa just a short while after that, setting up their future role in the larger conflict around the globe.

Orisa Hero Abilities and Guide
Augmented Fusion Driver (LMB)
- Technically infinite rapid-fire gatling gun with an overheat caveat.
- Has some spread and lower effectiveness at further ranges.
Energy Javelin (RMB)
- Equip and throw a javelin projectile.
- No damage falloff.
- Hitting an enemy hero with the projectile will knockback and stun enemies on impact.
- Stun and damage are increased if enemy hero collides with a wall as a result of the knockback.
Fortify (LSHIFT)
- Instantly provides Orisa with overheal, damage reduction and immunity to all movement-related CC abilities for the duration.
Javelin Spin (E)
- Equip a small javelin to spin in front of Orisa.
- Spin blocks projectiles and melee attacks.
- Javelin Spin also provides Orisa a speed boost and pushes nearby enemy heroes away from her.
Terra Surge (Q)
- Orisa’s Ultimate.
- Orisa starts charging while pulling nearby enemies towards a point above Orisa. When sufficient charge is reached or the ultimate is re-activated, Orisa slams down on the ground, dealing massive damage to enemy heroes.
- Orisa gains the same effects of Fortify for the channel duration but will not consume the cooldown.

In Overwatch 2, Orisa is a powerful frontline tank, with a large health pool and tools for damage reduction. Her strengths make her particularly formidable for sieging and holding objectives, thanks to her Fortify and Javelin Spin in particular. When her Terra Surge is online, her contest power increases tenfold as enemy heroes will have to keep some distance to avoid the pull and subsequent charged damage.
Orisa is overall a strong all-rounder tank that is good for contesting or holding points. The biggest key to playing Orisa comes from both positioning and ability cycling. Newer Orisa players will be tempted to spam all her sustain one after the other. However, that is the trap that will see Orisa's find themselves deeply entrenched with no way of negating damage or repositioning when all their cooldowns have been blown.
Orisa Best Combos
Orisa pairs well with a large number of heroes thanks to her overall kit simplicity. Thanks to her frontline presence and ability to draw aggro, Orisa is a powerful force on the battlefield, and one difficult for enemy forces to ignore.
Her Terra Surge is a powerful setup all on its own that not only collects together enemy heroes for a powerful follow-up damaging ultimate, but also draws a massive amount of attention, allowing for teammates to potentially catch a target off guard. Genji’s Dragonblade or Tracer’s Pulse Bomb are perfect examples of ultimates that can capitalize off the window Orisa can create.
Alternatively, Baptiste is a hero that can enable Orisa's full potential. With his Immortality Field, Baptiste can help prolong and even ensure Terra Surge gets fully-charged, delivering a devastating combo.

Orisa Counters
Strong Against
Orisa is incredibly strong against the vast majority of the tank roster, thanks to her Fortify, which allows her to negate movement-related CC that would otherwise force other tanks into detrimental positions. Reinhardt and Roadhog in particular struggle against her as she can not only Fortify, but also disrupt with her Javelin Throw, opening them up for a counter.
There are not very many heroes across the roster that Orisa directly counters. However, she is an excellent neutralizer and tends to go even in most matchups thanks to her raw power and numbers.
Weak Against
Orisa’s biggest drawback is her lack of mobility. She has a lot of HP but that can get shredded down pretty quickly if she is caught out. This makes positioning one of the biggest key skills for burgeoning Orisa players to master when first learning to play her. Because she has no barrier ability, Orisa is heavily reliant on her innate tankiness and damage reduction.
Heroes like Zenyatta can massively impact her sustain while Mei’s Endothermic Blaster can bypass Orisa’s Javelin Spin. Bastion can simply power through her resistances to melt her. Lastly, Zarya is a particularly difficult matchup. Her Particle Cannon is not stopped by Javelin Spin and attempted return fire from Orisa’s Augmented Fusion Drive can serve to charge Zarya up even faster.
