Inaugural Olympic Esports Games Confirmed for 2027
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has officially confirmed that the inaugural Olympic Esports Games will take place in 2027. This announcement follows months of speculation about potential delays, with initial plans targeting a 2025 launch.
The Olympic Esports Games mark a significant milestone in the integration of esports into mainstream global sports. With the backing of the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) as a Founding Partner, the event aims to create a structured and internationally recognized competition.
The announcement comes only a day after the EWC announced its three latest games, including League of Legends and, for the first time, VALORANT. The EWCF and IOC have promised to collaborate to establish qualification pathways and align national esports ecosystems with global standards.
Saudi Arabia as the Long-Term Host
Saudi Arabia will host the Olympic Esports Games for the next 12 years (covering three Olympic cycles), following an agreement made last year. The event will be organized in partnership with the Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee (SOPC), reinforcing the country’s commitment to positioning itself as a global esports hub.
Originally set for 2025, reports suggested the event was pushed back due to several key concerns, including, but not limited to, format uncertainty, unclear qualification process, financial model, etc.

Despite these hurdles, IOC President Thomas Bach has now assured that the roadmap is set:
“With the Road to the Olympic Esports Games starting this year, the Games are becoming a reality. This is further evidence of the strength of the partnership between the IOC and the SOPC in many areas.”
Saudi Arabia’s Growing Influence in Esports
Saudi Arabia has significantly expanded its presence in the global esports and gaming industry through major investments and strategic partnerships. Here are some examples of the country's growing influence in esports in recent years:
- Riyadh hosts the Esports World Cup, a premier tournament featuring top-tier competitions across multiple game titles.
- The country’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) has also acquired stakes in leading gaming companies, including ESL FACEIT Group and Hero Esports, further solidifying its influence.
- Additionally, a recent three-year partnership between Riot Games and the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) will bring VALORANT, League of Legends, and Teamfight Tactics tournaments to the Esports World Cup, reinforcing Saudi Arabia’s role in shaping competitive gaming.
However, Saudi Arabia’s growing involvement in esports has sparked controversy, with critics accusing the country of "esportswashing"—using the esports scene to improve its global image while facing scrutiny over its human rights record, particularly regarding women and LGBTQ+ communities.
As the 2027 Olympic Esports Games approaches, discussions surrounding Saudi Arabia’s role in the industry will extend beyond competition, raising broader ethical and political concerns about the intersection of esports, business, and global influence.
