LEC to allow teams to stream scrims following Los Ratones cancellation
In a recent post on X (Twitter), LEC Commissioner Artem Bykov announced that the LEC will allow teams to stream scrims during an upcoming 'trial' phase.
For a short period of time, and under specific conditions, teams will be allowed to stream their scrims live for the public everywhere to see, while the league monitors the situation as they decide what the next step forward is.
The Buildup: Riot Games cancel Los Ratones
Los Ratones revolutionized the Tier-2 scene in Europe earlier in the year by opting to stream each and every scrim session for everyone to see. Soon after conquering the NLC, Los Ratones announced they would be scrimming the LEC's GIANTX up next, with the games set to be streamed live.
With GIANTX having looked highly competitive during the LEC Winter Season, the prospect of Los Ratones measuring up to a Tier-1 European team quickly garnered a lot of attention.
The idea, however, was short lived, as Riot Games was forced to step in and put a stop to Los Ratones' plans due to the fact that GIANTX agreeing to livestream their scrims would go directly against LEC rules.
Following the public's overwhelmingly negative response to the news of the cancellation, however, Riot Games has now begun looking to correct the issue.
LEC teams to stream scrims: Trial phase
Starting March 15th, and lasting until March 23rd, a trial phase will be put into effect, allowing LEC teams to scrim their scrims under the following conditions:
- Streamed scrims will not overlap with EMEA Masters broadcasts.
- Each team can only appear in one streamed scrim during the trial phase.
During the course of this 8-day trial phase, Riot Games and the LEC team will monitor these streamed scrims and their effect on teams, fans, and competition, before coming to a decision on a more long-term solution.
"Until now, scrim streams have been restricted globally to prevent oversaturation in an already packed calendar and to keep key matchups feeling special. Think of the G2 vs. KC rematch happening at the LEC Roadtrip in a packed arena in France. The Americas region recently ran a scrim streaming trial during the LTA’s first split and the positive reception showed that this can add more excitement and engagement for fans. With that in mind, we believe it’s time to explore a more flexible approach in the LEC." - Artem Bykov, LEC Commissioner
Though teams have yet to announce how they will make use of this opportunity, expect lots of high level League of Legends to come to your screens over the course of the next 8 days as LEC teams dive straight into this trial phase.
