[Updated] The Ultimate Viewer Guide to LoL Worlds 2023
It's time for Worlds 2023! First off, what is Worlds? The League of Legends World Championship, or more commonly known by its shorthand, Worlds, is the annual pinnacle event for the Tier 1 LoL competitive circuit. Essentially, the best teams from every region in the world get to send representatives and at the end, we crown a winner, the ‘best team for the year.’ Without further ado, here is the all-comprehensive guide on everything you need to know about League of Legends Worlds before you start watching.
What is Worlds 2023
Worlds 2023 is the conclusion of the 2023 League of Legends esports season, which comprehensively includes representatives from every Tier 1 League of Legends league. It is the 13th edition of the annual event. Worlds 2023 is set to be held in South Korea. It is set to be held between the 10th of October and 19th of November.
Worlds 2023 Schedule and Format
At the start of 2023, Riot Games announced major formatting changes, which will shift how the tournament plays out. In Worlds 2023, the tournament will still include three stages (Play-In, Swiss, Knockout).
The Play-Ins will include 8 teams drawn across two double-elimination brackets. The teams will compete in Bo3 format. To conclude, the top 2 teams from each bracket will compete in a Bo5 qualifier. The 1st seed from Bracket A will compete with the 2nd seed from Bracket B and vice versa.
You can find the full schedule, results and event information for the Play-Ins here.
These 2 teams will then advance to Stage 2, where they will join the other 14 teams (making a total of 16 in the Swiss stage). The Swiss stage of the competition will include teams battling across 5 rounds in a single table, with matchups drawn after the conclusion of each round. Teams with 3 wins automatically move on to the final stage. Teams with 3 losses are automatically eliminated.
Aside from qualification and elimination series, all games played in this stage will be Bo1s. The former two series will be played as Bo3s instead.
You can find the full schedule, results and event information for the Swiss Stage here.
In the final stage, Knockout, the final 8 teams that qualify through will be placed into a single-elimination bracket. All series will be played as Bo5s.
You can find the full schedule, results and event information for the Playoffs here.
