Season 12 of Overwatch 2 has arrived, and with it, an interstellar journey that promises to redefine the gaming experience. This season packs in exciting content and essential updates, from the introduction of a new hero from Mars to the launch of a thrilling game mode. Here’s everything you need to know about the August 20, 2024, patch.

Meet Juno: The New Support Hero from Mars

The highlight of Season 12 is undoubtedly Juno, a cheerful and extraordinary new Support hero. Born on Mars during Project Red Promise, Juno brings a unique blend of healing and damage-dealing abilities to the battlefield. Armed with her versatile Mediblaster and Pulsar Torpedoes, she can simultaneously heal allies and damage enemies. Her Hyper Ring ability boosts team movement, making her an invaluable asset in fast-paced battles.

Clash: A New Core Game Mode

Season 12 introduces “Clash,” a new core game mode that adds a strategic twist to traditional Overwatch gameplay. Clash features five capture objectives placed on a linear, mirrored map. The match begins at the center objective (Objective C), and teams must capture and hold objectives to score points. The first team to accumulate five points wins the match.

Clash debuts with two new maps, Hanaoka and Throne of Anubis, and will be featured in Quick Play, Competitive Play, and the Arcade for a limited time.

Hero Mastery Updates: Pharah and Zarya

For those who enjoy mastering heroes, Season 12 brings new single-player Hero Mastery courses for Pharah and Zarya. These courses, available for a limited time from August 20 to September 3, offer challenges that test players' skill, timing, and accuracy, with up to 22,500 Battle Pass XP and new rewards up for grabs.

Revamped 'Avoid As Teammate' System

The Avoid As Teammate feature has received a significant overhaul. Players now have 15 avoid slots, divided into 3 Pinned slots and 12 Recent slots. Pinned slots never time out, ensuring that certain players will never be in your matches. The Recent slots function similarly to the old avoid system, timing out after 7 days. This update allows for better management of avoided players and more personalized match experiences.

Spawn System Overhaul: Wave Respawn

In a move aimed at reducing one-sided matches, the spawn system has been revamped. Wave Respawn replaces Group Respawn in all non-Competitive modes and is now also part of Competitive Play. The default respawn time has been increased from 10 to 12 seconds. And overtime respawn time from 13 to 14 seconds. These changes are designed to balance gameplay and create more engaging matches.

Competitive Play: Mid-Year Rank Reset

In Season 12, all players' competitive skill ranks have been reset. Players must now complete ten placement matches for each role to determine their new rank and start climbing the leaderboard again.

This reset is part of a broader plan to refresh the competitive landscape every six months, coinciding with major updates that include significant hero balance adjustments, the introduction of new heroes like Juno, new game modes such as Clash, and changes to core gameplay systems like respawning.

Additionally, the game now displays the "Predicted Rank" in all areas where a player's rank is shown, rather than only at the end of placement matches. This rank prediction is a private statistic, visible only to the player themselves.

It will now play a crucial role in determining whether a group is considered "Wide" or "Narrow," which affects matchmaking times. With this adjustment, players can expect faster queue times in many scenarios following a rank reset.

Hero Updates: Mobility and Balance Changes

The August 2024 patch focuses on balancing the game’s mobile heroes, particularly in the Damage and Support roles. Many heroes have seen their base health reduced to 225 HP, reflecting the tradeoff for their mobility. Notable changes include:

  • D.Va: Defense Matrix max duration reduced from 3.5s to 3s.
  • Orisa: Energy Javelin impact damage increased from 60-80.
  • Zarya:
    • Secondary fire minimum damage increased from 47 to 55.
    • Secondary fire maximum damage increased from 95 to 110.
  • Juno:
    • Base health reduced from 250 to 225.

    • Pulsar Torpedoes damage and Healing impact increased from 75 to 85.
    • Pulsar Torpedoes Heal-over-time reduced from 60 to 50 health.
    • Hyper Ring deploy range increased by 3.5 meters.
    • Hyper Ring Cooldown reduced from 16 to 14 seconds.
    • Orbital Ray beam travel speed increased from 1.9 to 2.25 meters per second.
    • (All changes are based on pre-season testing)
  • Echo, Hanzo, Sombra, Torbjörn: Base health reduced to 225 (base armor increased to 75 for Torbjörn)
  • Junkrat:
    • Frag Launcher projectile size is now reduced by half after the second ricochet.
    • Projectiles preserve slightly more velocity on ricochet.
  • Sojourn:
    • Railgun primary fire weapon spread reduced from 2 to 1.6 degrees.
    • Critical hits now grant 10 energy.
    • Energy degeneration rate reduced from 33 to 15 per second after 7 seconds.
  • Sombra: Virus impact damage increased from 25 to 35.
    • Stealth bonus movement speed increased from 45 to 60%.
  • Illari: Solar Rifle maximum ammo reduced from 16 to 14.
    • Captive Sun projectile environment collision size reduced from 0.15 to 0 meters.

Developers implemented these changes to create a more balanced and competitive environment, especially as players adapt to Juno’s gameplay style.

Shop and Quality of Life Improvements

Players can now try out all skins in the practice range, making it easier to decide on purchases. Additionally, Juno received several quality-of-life improvements, such as better visual and sound cues for her abilities, making her gameplay more intuitive and enjoyable.

Map and Mode Updates

The game now prioritizes new maps and modes, giving players more opportunities to experience them frequently at the start of new seasons. In Clash and Flashpoint, capture point outlines are now visible through walls when unlocked. Developers have randomized lighting scenarios in Quick Play and Competitive modes to create a more dynamic experience.

Bug Fixes and Final Tweaks

The patch also addresses numerous bugs, including issues with weapon skins, hero abilities, and achievements. Notably, developers have fixed the effects of Ashe’s mythic skin on Steam and improved the collision for Illari’s Solar Rifle.

Season 12 of Overwatch 2 brings exciting new content and significant gameplay changes that promise to keep the community engaged and challenged. You can read the complete patch notes HERE.
