After teasing the addition of Rank Shields in the Patch 10.0 reveal trailer, Riot Games will officially introduce this exciting new feature in Patch 10.01. Designed to provide players with a buffer during their Competitive grind, Rank Shields aim to soften the frustration of instant demotions.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new Rank Shields and how they work in VALORANT.

What Are Rank Shields?

Rank Shields are a new mechanic added to Competitive Mode for both PC and Console players. They serve as a protective measure for players who are at risk of demotion in Tier 1 of all Ranks, except Radiant. By offering a safeguard against immediate rank loss, they allow players to recover and bounce back without immediate repercussions.

How Do Rank Shields Work?

Availability in Tier 1

Rank Shields are exclusive to Tier 1 of every rank except Radiant. For example, players in Silver 1, Gold 1, or Platinum 1 will have access to Rank Shields. However, those in Gold 2, Silver 2, or higher tiers within a rank will not have this protection.

How Shields Are Consumed

  • Initial Shield Count: Players in Tier 1 start with two shields.
  • Shield Usage:
    • Losing a match at 0 RR consumes one shield, leaving you with one remaining.
    • A second consecutive loss at 0 RR consumes the second shield, leaving you with none.
    • A third consecutive loss at 0 RR results in demotion to the lower rank (e.g., Gold 1 to Silver 3).

Shield Replenishment

  • Shields are replenished only when you are promoted or demoted into Tier 1 of a rank.
  • Winning a game at 0 RR (e.g., to regain 10 RR) will not restore your shields.

How to Track Your Rank Shields

Players can view their current shield status in the Rank Details screen in the VALORANT client. This feature provides an easy way to stay informed about how many shields you have left and manage your gameplay decisions accordingly.

When does VALORANT Patch 10.01 go live?

It is currently unconfirmed when Patch 10.01 will go live. However, with Patch 10.0 having gone live back on the 7th, the new patch should be close on the horizon. Stay tuned for more information.

With Patch 10.01, Riot Games continues to refine the competitive experience in VALORANT, ensuring players have both a challenge and a safety net. Dive into Ranked, track your shields, and embrace the grind!
