The MongolZ Qualify for Shanghai Major Playoffs; Mark Asia’s Best Major Result Yet
The MongolZ have etched their name in Counter-Strike history, reaching the Playoffs of the Perfect World Shanghai Major with a perfect record. This incredible feat surpasses Tyloo’s 2018 performance at the Faceit London Major, where they finished 12th-14th, marking a new milestone for Asian Counter-Strike.
The MongolZ have always been a team capable of surprising even the strongest opponents, but this time, they’ve solidified their position as a force to be reckoned with on the global stage. From their first Major appearance at BLAST.tv Paris to standing tall among the world’s best, their journey has been nothing short of extraordinary—a level many teams chase but fail to achieve.
Under the leadership of Garidmagnai "bLitz" Byambasuren, the team’s flawless 6-0 run is a testament to their skill and determination. While their strong performance in the Opening Stage came as no surprise, the Elimination Stage presented an entirely new challenge. Against tournament favorites, The MongolZ delivered, taking down G2 Esports, MOUZ, and even reverse sweeping Heroic in a thrilling BO3.
With one of the youngest rosters at the Major, The MongolZ entered the tournament with a clear goal: to reach the Playoffs and go even further. Their belief in themselves was summed up by Sodbayar "Techno4K" Munkhbold’s confident words—and their performance so far has more than justified that confidence.
This achievement is not just a victory for the team but a significant moment for the Counter-Strike community. Fans worldwide have celebrated their success, embracing their underdog story as an inspiring chapter in the history of the game.
The road to glory
The MongolZ started their Elimination Stage with a stunning upset over G2, one of the tournament favorites. Playing on Inferno, The MongolZ displayed sharp tactics and solid individual performances to take control of the game.
G2 had their moments, including an incredible quad-kill from Nikola "NiKo" Kovač and a clutch 1v3 by Janusz "Snax" Pogorzelski, but The MongolZ stayed calm under pressure. By forcing G2 into economic struggles during their T-side, The MongolZ punished every mistake and closed out the match with a 13-10 victory.
Overtime Nail-biter
Their second match against MOUZ was an absolute thriller, stretching into overtime on Mirage. The MongolZ started slow but quickly found their rhythm, surging to a 10-5 lead. However, MOUZ mounted a fierce comeback, with standout moments like Ádám "torzsi" Torzsás delivering crucial 3k rounds that forced the game into overtime.
In the high-pressure overtime rounds, The MongolZ proved their grit and determination, taking four of the five rounds to secure a 16-13 victory. A pivotal moment came when Techno4K pulled off a clutch 1v2, keeping his team in the fight and setting the stage for their win. This victory placed The MongolZ in the 2-0 pool, leaving them just one win away from securing a spot in the playoffs which they secured after reverse sweeping Heroic, the other stage surprise.
The MongolZ Major history
This Major is The MongolZ’s third appearance under their current name, and they’ve improved with every showing. At the BLAST.tv Paris Major 2023, they reached the Challengers Stage. At the PGL Major Copenhagen 2024, they pushed further to the Elimination Stage. Now, they’ve outdone themselves by making it to the Playoffs—a huge step forward for the team and their region.
This accomplishment is a defining moment, not just for The MongolZ but for aspiring players in their region. It’s proof that hard work and perseverance can lead to incredible results. Whether they can keep the momentum going and pull off something extraordinary is yet to be seen. Be sure to tune in on the 12th and watch as they aim to make history.
