Valve officially ends support for CSGO after over a decade
It is truly the end of an era. Valve has officially ended their support for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive as of January 1st; ringing in the new year with a shift to full support focus on their new premier FPS title - Counter-Strike 2. What this means is that CS:GO will no longer be receiving any new patches or updates, freezing the game in its final patch as a memento for the ages.
Does this mean CS:GO will be officially unavailable for access?
No. CS:GO will still be available for access and launch via the beta branch method in the Steam library. For the time being at least, fans of CS:GO will still be able to experience the game (without multiplayer) without many issues. However, as Valve continues making updates to Counter-Strike’s coordinator, they have warned of a likelihood that functionality of certain features may begin to fail. This includes access to inventory as an example, with Valve citing that it may degrade and/or fail thanks to failing compatibility with the Game Coordinator.
Safe Haven Gone: Time Pressure now On
With the official ending of support for CS:GO, Valve has shut the doors on their safety net. This locks them and the playerbase into a ticking-clock certainty of CS2 being the only standing option eventually. The slew of bugs, game-breaking issues, and lack of satisfaction with CS2 continues to be an ongoing battle with Valve’s developers on the other side. CS:GO’s remnant had previously served as a respite and safe haven. Since Valve ended support for the beloved decade-long game, it now becomes unknown for how much longer this will remain an option for players.
As we spectate Valve’s progress on CS2 with cautious optimism, it remains to be seen if they can continue the pace of fixes as they have done in the opening few months of the game. However, Counter-Strike tournaments begin to loom in 2024 - the time crunch is on!
