In a strategic move aimed at ensuring sustainable growth and preventing financial excesses, the VCT CN is set to implement a salary cap. Eric Feng, the Director of TJ Sports and head of VALORANT Esports CN, disclosed this pivotal decision in an exclusive interview with Ma Xiao of People’s E-Sports.

Regulating Expenditures for Long-Term Stability

The introduction of a salary cap comes as an additional measure alongside the existing minimum salary requirement. This proactive step is designed to regulate team expenditures. Thus preventing wage costs from spiraling out of control.

Feng also mentioned that TJ Sports commits to closely monitoring player transfers in the inaugural season of VCT CN. With the overarching goal of achieving a harmonious balance between organizations and players.

“We want to try to go as far as we can with our efforts so that some of our very good players can find great teams to play for and then also work together to raise the level of competition in our league as a whole.”

The Specifics

The specifics of the salary cap plan and its upper limit within the VCT CN League remain undisclosed. But this decision marks a groundbreaking move. This marks the first instance of introducing a salary cap in any of the four VCT International Leagues.

The minimum annual salary across regions varies, reflecting the local currencies of hub cities. In the Americas, the minimum salary is $50,000 U.S. dollars. The minimum salary in EMEA is set at 50,000 euros. And in the Pacific region, it stands at 67 million KRW.

Following the LPL's Footsteps

The VCT CN League takes inspiration from the LPL, which implemented a salary cap system in 2020. The LPL's soft salary cap had a base limit of 10 million Chinese yuan (approximately $1.5 million) per team. Thus aiming to foster financial stability and competitive balance.

Both the LCK and LEC have also announced the implementation of a salary cap system. Known as the Sporting Financial Regulations (SFR), in July and September of this year, respectively. These rules aim to support the long-term financial stability and competitive balance of tier-one League of Legends competition in Korea and EMEA.

As VCT CN aligns with global leagues in implementing a salary cap system, the community eagerly anticipates further details on the regulations. This move signifies a collective effort to shape the financial landscape of esports for long-term sustainability.
